Prysmian is increasingly focusing on complete solutions
Prysmian, the largest cable manufacturer in the world, is unveiling the group’s new business strategy to move from a cable manufacturer to a provider of full solutions. According to the head of the company, Massimo Battaini, the five-year business strategy Connect to Lead aims to take advantage of the current market position to develop and consolidate its strengths and to be an innovation leader in the cable industry.
"Taking into account the growth of electricity consumption in the market today, the pressure to increase the production of renewable energy and the need for a more stable electricity grid, we have positioned ourselves as a market advocate in our field. We are innovative, adaptable, we understand the dynamics of the market and future trends," said Battaini. "Our main goal is to transform the group from a cable manufacturer to a provider of cabling solutions."
"The new strategy is a natural next step in what we have been doing so far. Our goal is to be the market leader and the new strategy is based on today's market dynamics" comments Tarvo Leppik, CEO of Prysmian Baltic Region.
What is the new strategy based on?
The new strategy is based on four pillars, which are crucial to cope with the new market dynamics and take advantage of growth opportunities. These include increasing self-financing capacity, a balanced and innovative product portfolio, increasing the impact of people and segmenting the business.
The first pillar of the strategy is to support organic growth in investments through consistent cash flow. This means that the company will continue to invest in increasing production capacity and enhancing capabilities to continue to serve customers and keep pace with growing demand. To this end, capital investment will double from €310 million to €540 million over five years.
The innovative portfolio reflects the main focus of the company, i.e. innovation. The aim is to focus on more sustainable cabling solutions, and continuous innovation will also help achieve sustainability goals. In addition, Prysmian recognises and values its workforce as the foundation of the company's success, and therefore the company invests heavily in involving employees, promoting cooperation and developing their skills in order to increase people's capabilities and knowledge. And the last but not least pillar is the expansion of the activities of the group according to market needs from the current three segments to four, which are energy transmission, power grids, electrification and digital solutions.
The most capable submarine cable laying fleet in the world and traceable cable drums
In terms of innovation, Prysmian has already taken very important steps today. For example, the group has the largest state-of-the-art fleet of cable-laying vessels in the world consisting of six cable-ships. Cables can be installed in a wide range of locations, from shallow water to a depth of three kilometres, regardless of the surface and whether a single cable needs to be installed or the work needs to be carried out as a complete solution.
However, Alesea, an assistant for cable drums, and the accompanying app, has transformed simple packaging into an intelligent asset that supports customers in streamlining their operations and inventory management by providing them with real-time visibility and information on their inventory. Julia Adamson, supply chain manager at Prysmian Baltic, explains that in the world of cable production, cable drums are indispensable, and play an important role in packaging and delivery. "Alesea provides an opportunity to make drums traceable. The solution allows to see, in real time, the location of the drums, the environmental conditions and useful information about the cable, such as its type and the remaining length on the drum in meters."
While in the Baltics Prysmian is still carrying out pilot projects regarding Alesea, Voimatel, a Finnish network operator is already using the Alesea solution, having improved the monitoring of its projects and increased the timely return of the drums. This in turn extends the life cycle of the drums, reducing both waste generation and supporting sustainability goals.
Sustainability-focused solutions for medium- and high-voltage projects and the construction sector
The transition to renewable energy leads to significant changes, increasing the loads on networks. Prysmian’s goal is to provide solutions for the best construction and operation of systems, as well as accessories for system calculations and project execution in addition to cables in the preparation phase of medium and high voltage projects. "In projects, we are used to using the minimum calculated cross-sections of cables, but in the long term, it is important to think about the maximum efficiency of the system, taking into account, for example, possible losses," says Tanel Laasma, sales manager for medium and high voltage at Prysmian Baltics.
Prysmian is about to launch a tool called TEC3, which will allow various system calculations to be carried out, such as the cost-effectiveness and carbon footprint of different options. "Our goal is to support our customers' big investments through data and find the best complete solution for them," says Kadri Armas, marketing manager of Baltics. "Although sustainability issues are viewed with some caution in the Baltic countries, Prysmian is making efforts to be at the forefront here too. We can see from the Scandinavian projects that sustainability is becoming increasingly important."
One of the important steps in the area of sustainability is the E Path (previously called ECO CABLE), Prysmian's label for products and services with a lower environmental impact, which complies with new European legislation on environmental impact. E Path today stands for the lower environmental impact product portfolio, but will gradually expand to service as well. Currently Prysmian offers E Path labelled cables for construction in the Baltic countries to make our homes, offices and infrastructure more sustainable and durable.
